Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman to divorce

All divorces are sad, but when a couple divorces after many years together it is especially disheartening to hear about. Recently press reports told of just such a case. Actors Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman are to divorce after being married for 30 years.

DeVito, 67, and Perlman, 64, met in 1970 and were married in 1982. They worked together on the 1980s TV series Taxi. Readers in Colorado probably remember Perlman from her role as Carla, the hard-boiled waitress on the TV series Cheers. DeVito has appeared in a number of films and recently was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The couple has three adult children.

Any couple, celebrity or not, dealing with dissolution of marriage has a number of issues to deal with. For a high profile couple with significant assets, asset division is likely to be the major issue.

In Colorado, courts divide marital property according to equitable guidelines. Marital property is generally that property which the couple acquired during the marriage. "Equitable division" means a division that is fair and just in the eyes of the court, not necessarily equal. Marital property does not include property acquired during the marriage by way of an inheritance, or as a gift. Separate property is that property each spouse brought to the marriage; it is not divided, but when separate property has appreciated in value during the marriage, that appreciation is divided equitably.

Dealing with asset division in a high asset divorce can be a complex task. An experienced family law attorney familiar with the law and with asset valuation issues can help a spouse get what they are entitled to.
