As economy improves, divorce is on the increase

Many people in Colorado may not be seeing it yet, but economists tell us the economy is beginning to recover from the worst recession since the 1930s. As the economy slowly improves, things that slowed down during the recession are bouncing back - including the number of divorces.

Clint Eastwood headed for divorce

Colorado moviegoers are very familiar with Clint Eastwood. The 83-year-old actor has made a long career out of playing tough guys. It now appears he is headed for a divorce. His wife of 17 years, Dina Eastwood, 48, has filed legal separation papers with the Monterey County Superior Court in Monterey, California. The couple has apparently lived apart since last summer.

Divorce as a force for good in the world

In Colorado, as throughout the United States, the increase in the divorce rate over the last century or so is generally viewed as an unfortunate development. But as a recent article pointed out, in the developing world the increased availability of divorce is associated with positive trends in society. In Africa, Latin America and Asia, liberalization of divorce laws goes hand in hand with improvements in the equality and economic status of women.

What to do when divorce is on the horizon

Some divorces come as a complete surprise to one spouse. But in many cases, both spouses see it coming.
