Many Colorado parents have gone through divorce and worked together to agree on child custody and parenting time arrangements. Actors Tea Leoni and David Duchovny dealt with this issue recently. The couple reportedly finalized their divorce after reaching a negotiated agreement on the terms.

Leoni and Duchovny were married in 1997. They separated for several months in 2008, but then reconciled. They separated again in 2011. Duchovny filed for divorce in June of this year, alleging the marriage had broken down irretrievably.

The former couple have two children, ages 12 and 15. They agreed that the kids will live primarily with Leoni, although legal custody will be shared. Sources report that Duchovny agreed to pay child support in the amount of $8,333 per month as well as other expenses relating to the children.

In Colorado, courts refer to child custody as parenting responsibility. The term encompasses the right to make important decisions regarding the child’s education, welfare, religion and health care. The issue of how much time the child spends with each parent is referred to as parenting time. Family court judges in Colorado award a set number of overnight stays to each parent, based on a number of factors. The court will put the best interests of the child first when formulating a parenting plan.

Divorce can be a difficult time for children. Once the divorce decree is finalized, it is up to the parents to ensure the children make the transition from one household to two with as little trauma as possible.
