Woman turns divorce experience into successful musical

Colorado readers who’ve been through a divorce know how stressful it can be. One New York woman, who says she was jilted by her husband of 34 years in favor of a younger woman, found a novel way to deal with the heartache: she put together a musical about the experience and put it into production.

The woman’s 61-year-old ex-husband was a successful Broadway producer. Two years ago he left his wife for his 42-year-old producing partner. The wife responded by selling the jewelry he had bought her and financing a show under the original title “Divorce-the Musical.” After initial success the woman raised additional money and took a revamped version of the show, now titled “‘Til Divorce Do Us Part,” to an Off-Broadway theatre in Manhattan. It began previews the day after a show produced by her ex-husband opened on Broadway.

When a high-profile couple divorces, the asset division can be complex and acrimonious. For a spouse to get what they deserve in the division of business assets, real estate and other holdings requires the counsel of a lawyer who understands asset valuation and complex asset division issues. If the couple are unable to agree on a settlement, the lawyer must be able to explain to the court why their client’s position is fair and justified under the law.

Not everyone has the talent and the luck required to turn their high asset divorce into a successful stage production. If there’s a lesson here, it’s that it’s possible to turn even a painful episode like divorce into something positive. Divorce is the end of a marriage, but it’s also the beginning of a new life — one that can be adventurous and exciting.
