Divorce parties becoming a new trend

On Behalf of | Jun 6, 2014 | Uncategorized |

Colorado couples going through a divorce understand the process can be fraught with stress and emotion. Yet once the dissolution of marriage is finalized, many feel a sense of freedom and relief. Some are choosing to celebrate that freedom by throwing a divorce party.

Divorce parties have become something of a trend in recent years. A recent news article interviewed event planners and cake bakers who say they have witnessed the increase. Two of the bakers interviewed say they now average about one divorce cake a month. And some celebrating the finalization of a high asset divorce choose to spend freely on the party; one cake designer recalls a woman who spent $25,000 on her divorce bash.

Years ago people who got divorced often felt a sense of shame or failure. The rise in divorce parties can be seen as a healthy indication that those days are past for many. It is also understandable that some people choose to celebrate the conclusion of the stressful process of asset division and disputes over real estate and marital property. Of course, if the person feels they got a fair deal in the divorce settlement, there is all the more reason to celebrate.

Some might find the idea of divorce parties tasteless or insensitive. They are certainly not for everyone. But the idea they convey is a positive one: divorce may mean the end of a marriage, but it also marks the beginning of a new phase in one’s life, and many people find that new phase liberating and empowering.
